Winston might just be the Voice of Reason, but I think he's also been described as the Everyman. He usually asks the questions the audience would like to ask one of the other three, so that the audience gets answers. He's very no-nonsense, in a mundane way.
It was supposed to be revealed in the ongoing series that Louis was actually still possessed by Vinz Clortho, which is why he was still so actively going after Dana (probably hoping that she was still under Zuul's influence), but the real Louis was shining through a lot more than after his initial possession. I think Moranis' Louis is kind of sweet, especially in GBII once things get started with Janine. Louis was originally intended to be played by John Candy, and was supposed to be creepier and sleazier with women. I liked the backstory of how Mike went crazy because, suddenly, he could communicate with ghosts. Not that he was fully sane to begin with, seemed to be a bit obsessive about things. I do see a lot of Gollum in Mike and would not be surprised if the success of LotR (Legion was probably written sometime in 2003, since the comic came out, with delays, in 2004) had had an influence on the direction the character went.
As for "success of the brain" aside from his being an accountant, Louis isn't really all that brainy. He made the right move telling his story to the right people, who are probably making even more money off it than he's making. Since Venkman got the girl (Dana), I think he shouldn't obsess over Louis and his success with women so much. But that's Peter "The Womanizer" Venkman, you know? The other three don't give a damn, only he does.
