I finally just saw Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance yesterday. Bought the DVD, actually.
In this one, the story takes a huge departure (especially when they fight the, I think, 10th Angel... the one Unit 01 devours in the original) from the original series, but OMG, it's so great, and the animation is incredible. And, yes, I get that lyrical dissonance-type stuff is one of Anno's favourite trope, but there is nothing like seeing violence on that scale set to a chorus of children singing a seemingly happy "we are friends" song to send chills up and down your spine. Eva Unit 03, anyone? *shudders*
And I still maintain Eva, both the original and the rebuild, are my favourite anime. It's something I am not allowing myself to watch in the Winter, because it's all kinds of triggery for depression, and I've been known to be moody for weeks after simply reading the synopsis for End of Evangelion. But it's also all kinds of awesome.
